Kraków shooting: reports say at least two killed and 10 injured; suspect status unclear

At least two people were reported killed and 10 injured in a shooting near Kraków’s Main Market Square on Saturday, but reports about the toll and the suspect’s status remain unsettled.

The Independent reported that authorities had given those figures after shots were fired in the city centre. A later report from Reuters, carried by Ynet, also cited Polish broadcaster TVN24, which attributed the figures to the fire brigade. The Associated Press reported that Kraków’s municipal government had confirmed deaths and injuries, but did not give a number in its report carried by Newsday.

Accounts of the toll have differed. The Daily Express reported at least two deaths, with reports suggesting the number could be as high as five, and at least 10 people injured. The higher fatality figure has not been established by the other reports cited here.

Poland’s fire service said shots were fired from a passing vehicle in the Main Market Square, according to TVP World. Emergency crews were at the scene near St Mary’s Basilica, and an air ambulance helicopter landed in the square. The fire service urged people in the area to seek shelter.

Police were investigating and carrying out an operation on Dietla Street, the city hall said, according to The Independent. Prime Minister Donald Tusk said police were examining the circumstances of the attack and that he was being kept informed by the interior ministry.

It was not clear from the reporting whether anyone had been arrested. Although claims circulated on social media that police had shot the suspected attacker, the available reports did not confirm that account. The identity of the shooter and the motive were also not established.
