A magnitude 6.0 earthquake was reported off Japan’s Mie Prefecture at 7:15 a.m. local time on Sunday, November 1, according to VolcanoDiscovery’s report citing US Geological Survey data.
The quake occurred at 22:15 UTC on October 31, at a reported depth of about 352 kilometres. VolcanoDiscovery placed it roughly 78 kilometres south of Ise. Its report gives a magnitude of 6.0; some social media posts relaying earthquake information described it as magnitude 6.1, illustrating that preliminary estimates can differ between agencies.
A separate VolcanoDiscovery report said other agencies also recorded the event, with magnitudes ranging from 5.9 to 6.0. It cautioned that the magnitude, epicentre and depth could be revised as seismic data are reviewed.
The quake was also being reported on X, including by accounts describing it as a deep earthquake off southeastern Mie. Those posts are reports of the event, not independent confirmation of local impacts. The material available does not establish whether there were injuries or damage, or provide an official assessment of effects.
VolcanoDiscovery said the quake’s great depth meant significant damage was not expected based on preliminary seismic data, although shaking may have been felt. Its report listed 38 felt reports at the time of publication. The precise shaking and any consequences remain subject to further reporting.
