M4.8 earthquake reported east of Taipei as Taiwan agency records magnitude 5.6

A magnitude 4.8 earthquake was reported 57 kilometres east of Taipei at about 4:20 p.m. local time on Sunday, 1 November, although Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration (CWA) put the magnitude at 5.6.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre and earthquake-monitoring account LastQuake both posted reports of a magnitude 4.8 quake east of Taipei. The EMSC report and LastQuake’s update gave the distance as 57 kilometres.

VolcanoDiscovery’s event listing, which identifies the US Geological Survey as its primary data source, records a magnitude of 4.8 and a depth of 119 kilometres. It lists weak shaking near the epicentre and 13 felt reports.

However, Focus Taiwan reported that the CWA measured the earthquake at magnitude 5.6, with its epicentre 39.4 kilometres east-northeast of Yilan County Hall and a depth of 119.5 kilometres. The reported magnitudes therefore differ, while the depth estimates are close.

Focus Taiwan said there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. The CWA’s reported intensity reached level 3 on Taiwan’s seven-tier scale in parts of Yilan and Hualien, and level 2 across much of northern, eastern and central Taiwan, as well as Tainan. Further details on the differing magnitude estimates were not available in the reports reviewed.
