One person was killed and eight others injured in a shooting near Legion Field in Birmingham after the Magic City Classic on Saturday night, according to CNN’s report citing Birmingham police.
Police responded at about 7.50 p.m. on 31 October to reports of gunfire near the stadium, where Alabama A&M University and Alabama State University had played their annual rivalry game. The shooting happened on Graymont Avenue near vendors outside Legion Field, Birmingham Police Chief Michael Pickett told ESPN.
Police spokesperson De’Rell Freeman told CNN that one of the injured people was in critical condition and seven others were stable. Officers recovered multiple firearms, and one person was detained and taken to police headquarters for questioning, CNN reported. Authorities had not publicly explained what led to the shooting.
Birmingham police suspended Magic City Classic tailgating and told people to leave the stadium grounds, according to CNN. The department later asked for video of the incident from witnesses and provided an online portal for submissions.
The Magic City Classic is an annual game between Alabama A&M and Alabama State, two historically Black universities. Alabama A&M won this year’s 85th edition, 31–28, HBCU Gameday reported.
Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin condemned the violence in a statement carried by CNN, saying there was no argument or misunderstanding that could justify it. The investigation is ongoing; police have not announced a motive or publicly identified the person detained.
