A Learjet 60 carrying nine people crashed into a residential neighbourhood in Greenacres, Florida, on Sunday afternoon, but a confirmed death toll was not immediately available.
The Palm Beach Post reported that the aircraft went down at about 12:50 p.m. local time near Military Trail and 10th Avenue North. Federal authorities said it had departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was bound for North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas.
The crash caused fires and scattered debris in a mobile-home neighbourhood. The Palm Beach Post and USA Today reported that, as of 3:30 p.m. ET, authorities had not confirmed fatalities among those aboard or people on the ground. A Beinsure report later said authorities had reported multiple fatalities, but did not provide a confirmed toll. The available reports therefore differ on the casualty status.
The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office closed both directions of Military Trail between Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North and advised motorists to avoid the area, according to the Palm Beach Post.
The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating, with the NTSB leading the inquiry, the Palm Beach Post reported. The cause of the crash and the identities and conditions of those aboard were not established in the initial reports.
