Durango flooding: Police urge residents to stay home as roads remain closed

Durango police urged residents to stay home on Monday, Nov. 2, as floodwaters and debris continued to disrupt roads across the area and crews worked to clear routes.

In a Monday update, the Durango Police Department said its lobby was closed and road crews and emergency responders were addressing flooding and debris and working to reopen roads. It asked people to avoid unnecessary travel, respect closures and never drive through floodwater. The department said emergencies should be reported to 911 and directed households affected by flooding to call 211 for assistance.

The Colorado Sun reported on Monday that La Plata County had closed roads as floodwater damaged streets and bridges. The Animas River near Durango stood at 8.5 feet on Monday morning, the outlet reported, up from 4.1 feet 24 hours earlier.

Road disruptions had already been reported in Durango on Sunday. The Durango Herald reported closures at Junction Street and Clovis Drive, and near Dalla Mountain Park, as well as no access into the city from County Roads 204 and 205 at that time. Those Sunday details do not establish the status of each route on Monday.

Flooding has also prompted closures beyond the city. Colorado Parks and Wildlife said its Southwest Region Office, Durango Area Wildlife Office and Navajo State Park Visitor Center would be closed on Nov. 2 because of extensive flooding in the Durango area.

The full extent of road damage and when individual routes will reopen were not specified in the available updates. Police urged residents to keep roads clear so emergency responders and repair crews could work.
