Shots reported at University of Toronto Mississauga; police say situation contained

Peel Regional Police said a situation at the University of Toronto Mississauga was contained after reports of shots fired near McLuhan Court residence prompted a shelter-in-place alert late Monday night.

The university issued its alert at about 9:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 2, after receiving reports of police activity at the residence at 3330 Residence Road. Police received a call about the incident at 9:11 p.m., according to The Toronto Star.

The Star reported that an updated university alert said Peel police had confirmed shots fired in the area and secured the surrounding area. Police later described the situation as contained, while urging people to avoid the area near Mississauga Road and Outer Circle Road. CBC News also reported that police said the situation was contained and that a large police presence remained nearby.

The university directed people on campus to shelter in place and those off campus to stay away from the affected area. The Star reported that the university planned to send campus alerts every 30 minutes until police deemed the area safe.

The Canadian Press, in a report carried by Yahoo News Canada, said police reported no physical injuries. Paramedics were staged nearby but had not taken any patients. Police described the call as involving dangerous weapons, the report said.

The available reports do not identify a suspect or explain the circumstances behind the police response. The university’s shelter-in-place directions and police guidance should be followed while the response continues.
