A shallow earthquake reported at magnitude 5.6 struck near Chaparral in Colombia’s Tolima department at 4:13 a.m. local time on Tuesday, 3 November, and was felt in Cali, Bogotá and other cities, Red+ Noticias reported, citing the Colombian Geological Service.
Red+ said the service initially listed the quake at magnitude 5.3 before updating it to 5.6 and locating the epicentre in Chaparral. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre said shaking was felt more than 200 kilometres from the epicentre, affecting an estimated 17 million people in Colombia. Magnitude estimates differ: the centre reported 5.5, while the US Geological Survey estimate was 5.4, according to Demócrata.
Reports of local impact are conflicting. Demócrata said Colombian authorities had not confirmed casualties or significant damage in Chaparral. However, an X post from @elpailascalico claimed one person was injured and homes were affected. That claim was not independently confirmed in the available reporting.
The quake was also reported felt in cities including Ibagué, Medellín and Armenia. The cited coverage does not establish whether anyone was injured or whether homes or other buildings were damaged; the extent of any impact remains unclear.
