Christchurch fire: Sydenham building blaze contained after smoke billows across city

A major building fire on Brisbane Street in Christchurch’s Sydenham district has been contained, with firefighters not expecting it to spread further, according to a 1News report citing Fire and Emergency New Zealand.

Emergency services were called at about 11.30am on Wednesday, 4 November. The blaze sent thick smoke across the city, with smoke drifting towards Moorhouse Avenue. Fire and Emergency said eight fire trucks, including two ladder trucks, attended.

Hato Hone St John told 1News that one person was assessed in a minor condition and did not need to go to hospital. Police were also at the scene.

Road closures and smoke advice

Police closed Brisbane Street and reported road closures at the Brisbane and Byron streets, and Gasson and Carlyle streets intersections. They asked people to avoid the area and warned of traffic delays, according to RNZ’s report from the scene.

Fire and Emergency advised people nearby to close doors and windows and avoid the area if possible. Health New Zealand warned that smoke may affect people with heart or lung conditions, pregnant people, young children and older adults.

Earlier reporting described the building as fully involved in fire. The latest 1News update said crews had contained the blaze to the building and did not expect it to spread. The cause of the fire has not been established in the supplied reports.
