Four-storey building collapses in São Paulo; 35 rescued, four injured

A fire department spokesperson said all 35 people inside a four-storey commercial building in São Paulo were rescued after its roof collapsed on Friday, with four people taken to hospital in stable condition, according to Reuters reporting carried by Devdiscourse.

The building is in Brás, a commercial neighbourhood in the central region of Brazil’s largest city. Images described in the report showed much of the structure behind its front section had given way.

Early reports gave a less settled picture as rescue operations unfolded. Police said the initial emergency call referred to 25 people affected, but that figure was unconfirmed. GloboNews reported that 17 people had been rescued at that stage, according to an earlier Reuters report carried by Devdiscourse.

São Paulo state government information cited in the later Reuters account said about 20 people had initially been trapped in a room that did not collapse. The fire department’s subsequent count put the number inside the building at 35, all of whom were rescued.

The later report said four people were injured and taken to hospital, where they were in stable condition. Earlier media reports had described dozens of injuries, but the supplied reporting did not confirm that higher figure.

The available reports do not establish what caused the collapse. The initial figures for people affected and the number rescued were preliminary; the fire department’s later account said everyone inside had been brought out.
