A magnitude-5.7 earthquake struck western Shizuoka Prefecture in central Japan at about 1.04am local time on Sunday, 8 November, with the strongest shaking reported in neighbouring Aichi, according to developing coverage.
Kyodo News reported the M5.7 quake in Shizuoka. A separate Rustourism News report said the Japan Meteorological Agency placed the epicentre in western Shizuoka, at a depth of about 40 kilometres, and that shaking reached upper 5 on Japan’s seismic intensity scale in western Aichi. Lower 5 shaking was reported in parts of neighbouring prefectures, the outlet said.
Early magnitude estimates differed: VolcanoDiscovery, citing US Geological Survey data, listed the quake at magnitude 5.5 and a depth of 38.1 kilometres. The difference may reflect separate agency estimates; the available reports do not establish a final reconciled figure.
The quake occurred at 16:04 UTC on Saturday, 7 November, corresponding to 1.04am on Sunday in Japan. Rustourism News said the initial information indicated no tsunami threat. The reports available here do not establish the extent of any damage or injuries.
The situation is developing. People in affected areas should follow local authorities’ safety guidance and check for updates from relevant agencies.
