More than 30 vehicles were involved in a crash on the M20 in Kent, leaving two people seriously injured and forcing the motorway to close in both directions between junctions 8 and 9.
Kent Police said officers were attending the collision. The crash was reported at about 6.40pm on Saturday, 7 November, on the London-bound carriageway between junction 9 at Ashford and junction 8 near Leeds Castle and Hollingbourne, according to The Independent’s report.
Police said two people sustained serious injuries. One was taken to a London hospital and the other to a local hospital. Other drivers were also hurt, but their injuries were not believed to be serious, the newspaper reported.
The closure affects both the London-bound and coast-bound carriageways between junctions 8 and 9. Police said the road was expected to remain closed overnight while the incident was dealt with, and urged motorists to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Kent Police’s incident notice says more than 30 vehicles were involved.
Kent Fire and Rescue Service said crews attended a multiple-vehicle crash near Hollingbourne. The Independent reported that three fire engines went to the scene and crews helped people get safely out of their vehicles. National Highways confirmed thick fog at the location and advised road users to take extra care, the report said. The available information does not establish whether fog contributed to the collision.
Early information about the scale of the crash varied: KentOnline reported that a National Highways update at 9.14pm referred to up to 20 vehicles, while Kent Police later stated that more than 30 were involved. The motorway’s reopening time was not confirmed in the reports.
