Kraków shooting: Six killed and 15 injured as police shoot suspect

Six people were killed and 15 injured in a shooting at Kraków’s Main Market Square on Saturday, 7 November, and police shot the suspected gunman before taking him into custody, according to developing reports.

The shooting happened at about 3pm local time in the historic centre of the Polish city. CBS News, citing police, reported that a man drove into an open market and fired from his car, striking people at random. Police wounded the suspect during a confrontation and took him to hospital.

The death toll rose as the investigation developed. Early reports gave lower figures, but OSV News reported six deaths and 15 wounded, including two police officers. A CNN report also cited police as saying at least six people had died.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said police were investigating the circumstances of the attack, CBS reported. OSV News later reported that Tusk said the suspect had killed his parents and sister at the family home before leaving for Kraków. That account is part of the developing investigation.

The suspect’s identity and motive have not been established in the reporting available here. Kraków, Poland’s second-largest city, is about 250 kilometres from Warsaw.
