Developing: Us Weekly reported that Kevin Kane’s character Terry Bruno is taking a brief leave of absence on Law & Order: SVU, and that the move is not being treated as a permanent cast exit.
In the report, Kane said viewers “will definitely not see Bruno for an episode,” but added that the situation is being handled as a short-term story beat and that Bruno returns. He also said, “If that were the case, you would know more than me,” when asked whether the absence signaled a longer departure, according to Us Weekly.
The publication tied the development to Thursday’s episode of the NBC procedural, in which Bruno becomes deeply invested in a case involving an online community of sex offenders sharing footage featuring children. Us Weekly reported that Mariska Hargitay’s Olivia Benson orders Bruno to go on leave after the case pushes him to a breaking point.
Separate episode photos and production details published by Seat42F identified the episode as season 28, episode 3, titled “Anonymity,” which aired Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on NBC, with next-day streaming on Peacock.
Kane’s comments make clear the development is a temporary absence rather than an announced departure from the series. As of this report, neither NBC nor the actor has said Bruno is leaving the show permanently.
