Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso said João Pedro was left out of the squad for Saturday’s match against Tottenham after feeling something in training the previous day, with the forward undergoing tests to assess the problem.
“At the moment, he has some fluid [around the injury], so we have to do some tests to see how big the injury is,” Alonso said, according to Chelsea’s official matchday report. He called the absence disappointing but said the team had to carry on.
The match was played at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, October 24. Metro reported that Pedro had been pictured in training on Friday before being omitted from the matchday squad. The supplied reports do not give a diagnosis or an expected return date; Alonso said further tests were needed to establish the extent of the injury.
Geovany Quenda replaced Pedro in Chelsea’s starting lineup. Alonso praised the winger’s ability to attack space and play with the ball, saying he wanted the team to be mobile and fluid. The club’s report said it was Quenda’s first Premier League start in English football.
