Five people were killed and one was injured in a shooting at Hotel Bilas Inn in Guwahati on Monday night, and police arrested a suspect within an hour, according to Guwahati Police Commissioner Partha Sarathi Mahanta as quoted by ANI. Police identified the accused as Ghanakanta Gogoi and seized the weapon, the commissioner said.
The firing took place at about 9 p.m. in the Bora Service area, the commissioner said. Six people sustained gunshot injuries; five later died and one was receiving hospital treatment. Four of those killed belonged to the same family, while the fifth and the injured person were from their village, ANI reported.
Police said their preliminary investigation indicated the shooting may have stemmed from a dispute over the hotel’s lease. Mahanta said the suspected dispute involved the hotel owner’s side and the person who had leased the property. The investigation was still at an early stage, and police were examining the circumstances, ANI reported. India Today also reported the five deaths, the arrest and the suspected lease dispute.
Initial coverage from The New Indian Express said police had confirmed four deaths at the scene while another injured person was being treated; the outlet later reported that the fifth person died at hospital. Police have not yet provided further updates in the material available about the investigation or any charges.
