Hayward fire: Tesla Semi blaze shuts southbound I-880 lanes

All southbound lanes of Interstate 880 remained blocked in Hayward late Tuesday after a Tesla Semi caught fire, with traffic diverted at West Winton Avenue, according to 511 SF Bay. Northbound lanes, which were also closed earlier, had reopened by about 8:40 p.m., the East Bay Times reported.

The fire began at about 5:35 p.m. Tuesday near Highway 92, just north of the highway, according to California Highway Patrol information cited by the East Bay Times. The CHP initially closed both directions because of potential hazardous smoke, the outlet reported. No other vehicles were involved, and there were no immediate reports of injuries.

Southbound closure could last for hours

CHP Officer Rolando Guzman told the East Bay Times that southbound lanes could remain closed for up to 18 hours, or until the fire was extinguished. Traffic was being diverted off I-880 at West Winton Avenue, the officer said.

SFGate, citing the CHP, reported that the truck’s lithium battery caught fire and that the driver did not know what caused the blaze. The cause remains under investigation; no preliminary finding was reported.

The NBC Bay Area report also described a complete shutdown of the southbound lanes. Earlier traffic updates from 511 SF Bay said northbound lanes had reopened while southbound lanes remained blocked.
