At least 10 people were killed when two high-speed trains collided in Spain’s Toledo province on Wednesday morning, and rail services between Madrid and Andalusia were suspended, according to reports citing regional officials and rail operator ADIF.
Reuters reported that the rear-end collision involved a Renfe train and an Iryo train shortly after 9 a.m. local time. ADIF said the crash occurred between the towns of Mora and Orgaz on the Madrid-to-Seville route. A Castilla-La Mancha government spokesperson told Reuters that two Iryo carriages derailed.
Esther Padilla, a spokesperson for the Castilla-La Mancha regional government, confirmed 10 deaths and said the number was expected to rise, The Associated Press reported in an article published by The Boston Globe. Padilla said one train struck the rear of another that had stopped, derailing two cars; the cause was not known.
ADIF said the Madrid–Andalusia high-speed line was suspended. NBC News reported that the collision took place just after 9 a.m. between Mora and Orgaz and that the trains were travelling from Madrid to Seville. Emergency services were responding, while officials had not established the cause or a confirmed total of people killed and injured in the reporting available.
