At least seven injured in shooting near Indiana University during homecoming weekend

At least seven people were taken to hospital after a shooting on Kirkwood Avenue near Indiana University’s Bloomington campus early on Sunday, 1 November, police said, as the city investigated gunfire during the university’s homecoming weekend.

Officers from Bloomington and Indiana University police were monitoring a large crowd at about 1.30am when they heard several shots in the 400 block of East Kirkwood Avenue, The B Square Bulletin reported, citing a Bloomington police release. The block runs between Grant Street and Dunn Street, a short distance from campus.

Police said a man carrying a gun was seen running from the area. Officers chased him and took him into custody near Dunn Meadow, where a gun was found nearby. It remained unclear whether the detained man fired any shots, according to WTHR.

Seven people were taken by ambulance to area hospitals. Police had not reported any deaths, and the nature and severity of the injuries were not known. Officers were also trying to establish whether anyone else had been hurt.

Preliminary information indicated that a disturbance in the crowd happened shortly before the shooting, the police release said. Investigators found shell casings of different calibres near the scene; the available reporting did not establish how many weapons were fired.

The shooting came about six hours after Indiana’s homecoming football game, which the university won in overtime, according to The B Square Bulletin. The investigation was ongoing, and police asked people with information or video of the incident to contact them.
