Palm Bay officials urge residents to shelter in place as flooding swamps roads

Palm Bay officials urged residents to shelter in place on Monday, November 2, as severe flooding made roads dangerous and emergency crews carried out rescues, according to WESH and later FOX 35 Orlando coverage.

The City of Palm Bay’s advisory told residents to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary travel until conditions improved. WESH reported that Mayor Rob Medina said the city had received about 20 inches of rain over 14 hours, with several roads washed out and some communities inaccessible.

Rescues and disrupted services

In a report published at 4:47 p.m. EST, FOX 35 said Palm Bay emergency crews were evacuating people from flooded neighbourhoods. Rescue teams had taken residents to City Hall, which was being used as a temporary meeting point; officials said about 20 people had been there earlier in the day.

WESH also reported a water-main break on Port Malabar Boulevard NE that interrupted service to affected customers. The break was beneath about four feet of water, preventing utility crews from safely reaching it to make repairs. Officials asked residents to conserve water while heavy rain continued.

According to WESH, Medina said there were no shelters open as of Monday afternoon, and that the city was working with Brevard County to open them. FOX 35 reported that authorities warned residents not to drive or walk through floodwater and said rescue operations were continuing.

Flash-flood emergency

Space Coast Daily reported that the National Weather Service had issued a Flash Flood Emergency for Palm Bay and West Melbourne earlier on Monday, with additional rain possible. The rainfall figures in the reports varied by time: the earlier weather information cited by Space Coast Daily gave totals of 8 to 12 inches in parts of southeastern Brevard County, while the mayor later described about 20 inches over 14 hours.

Flooding was also reported elsewhere in Brevard County, including West Melbourne. The reports available Monday afternoon did not provide a confirmed total for people injured or the full extent of damage. Residents were being urged to stay off flooded roads while crews worked to reach people in affected areas.
