CD Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel dies aged 30 after match collision

CD Tenerife confirmed that striker Jesús de Miguel, 30, died on Tuesday, 3 November, after a collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during a Spanish second-division match the previous evening.

The club said De Miguel died at 8am local time. He had been taken to hospital after the incident at Tenerife’s Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López, where the match was abandoned late in the game. ESPN reported that De Miguel had been in intensive care and that his condition deteriorated before the club announced his death.

The match was level at 2-2 when De Miguel collided with Owono while challenging for the ball. The Associated Press reported that De Miguel suffered a cardiac arrest following the collision and was taken to hospital by ambulance. The game was suspended in the 108th minute.

Owono was shown a red card during the match. That was an on-field disciplinary decision; the reports do not establish that the collision was intentional or that criminal responsibility has been determined.

The Spanish football federation postponed the Copa del Rey and Copa de la Reina matches scheduled for Tuesday following De Miguel’s death, according to ESPN’s report on the federation’s announcement. Tenerife expressed its grief and said De Miguel’s family asked for privacy.
