UTM partially lifts lockdown as shelter-in-place remains at McLuhan Court

The University of Toronto Mississauga has partially lifted its campus lockdown, but people at McLuhan Court Residence are still being told to shelter in place as police deal with an active incident.

An update shared by Alertable relaying a U of T alert said the lockdown had been partially lifted and the shelter-in-place order remained in effect at McLuhan Court. The Varsity reported the same status, saying Peel police described the situation as contained but still active.

The incident began on Monday evening, November 2, at the residence on Residence Road. CBC News reported that police received a call at 9:11 p.m. and that the university alerted students to an active threat, telling them to take shelter and secure doors. CP24 reported that the shelter-in-place order was issued after police activity was reported at McLuhan Court, 3330 Residence Road.

CP24 said Peel police reported at 11:45 p.m. that the incident was isolated and contained to a single residential unit, and that the immediate area had been evacuated. The outlet also reported that paramedics had no patients at the time. CBC said paramedics were on standby and had not been called to the scene.

A post from the account 905hub said Peel police had confirmed shots were fired near the residence. The supplied CBC and CP24 reports describe police activity and an active incident but do not independently confirm gunfire. The circumstances of the incident and whether anyone has been arrested have not been established in the reporting available here.

U of T said alerts would continue every 30 minutes until police deemed the area safe, according to CBC and CP24. The latest update indicates that the broader lockdown has eased, but the shelter-in-place instruction remains for McLuhan Court.
