Local reports say at least two Spokane County sheriff’s deputies were shot during a response to a reported domestic-violence incident near Spangle on Tuesday, Nov. 3, but accounts differ on the number of officers and civilians injured.
The shooting was reported near U.S. Highway 195 and Smythe Road, south of Spokane. The Spokesman-Review reported that Washington State Patrol spokesman Sgt. Greg Riddell said two sheriff’s deputies were injured during a confrontation there. NonStop Local also reported that two deputies were shot while responding to a domestic-violence call.
The casualty count remains unsettled. KREM, citing Washington State Patrol, reported at least three law-enforcement officers were injured and that multiple civilians were victims. By contrast, NonStop Local reported that two deputies and one other person were shot; KXLY later reported that Providence was treating three people from the incident. The supplied reports do not establish a final total or the injured people’s conditions.
There were also differing accounts of the suspect’s status. KREM reported that Riddell said no one was at large and the incident was no longer considered an active threat. The Spokesman-Review separately reported that a suspect might be barricaded. The available reports do not resolve that difference.
The incident disrupted travel and school transport. KREM reported U.S. 195 south remained closed, while NonStop Local said Interstate 90 had reopened and traffic remained congested. Liberty School District sent students back to Liberty Elementary School for parent pickup because buses could not pass the scene.
The investigation and response were still developing in the reports available. The number of people injured, their conditions and the full circumstances of the shooting had not been established.
