Des Moines post-office shooting injures three; suspect detained, police say

Three people were injured in a shooting at Des Moines’s main post office on Thursday morning, and police said a suspected shooter had been detained.

The shooting was reported at about 9.10am local time at the United States Postal Service building at 1165 Second Avenue, just north of downtown. The Des Moines Register reported that a multi-agency response was under way and police had asked the public to avoid the area around Second and University avenues.

Des Moines police Sgt Paul Parizek told CNN that callers inside the post office reported someone shooting on the building’s second floor. CNN reported that the suspect was detained just outside the post office.

All three injured people were taken to hospital. Their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, according to police as reported by KCRG, citing the Associated Press. The victims’ names and the suspect’s identity had not been released in the reports.

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds said she was in contact with the Department of Public Safety as the investigation continued, KCRG reported. Authorities had not released a motive or further details about the circumstances of the shooting.
