Two dead after building collapses in Delhi’s Chawri Bazaar; two officials suspended

Two people were killed and one injured when a three-storey building under construction collapsed near Chawri Bazaar in Old Delhi on Thursday morning, and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi suspended two engineers over the incident.

The collapse happened in Gali Sattara, in the Sheesh Mahal area near Chawri Bazaar Metro station, according to ThePrint’s report citing Delhi Police. The Delhi Fire Services received a call at about 9.50am from the Paiwalan area, the outlet reported.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said two people had died and one injured person had been rescued. In a video report, Press Trust of India quoted Gupta as saying the structure was a ground-plus-two building and that the cause of the collapse would be determined after an investigation.

The Municipal Corporation suspended the building’s junior engineer and assistant engineer, while an FIR was registered against the contractor, Gupta said. She said the engineers were suspended over lapses in supervision and alleged that the contractor had failed to ensure safety measures.

Six fire department units were sent to the site, and the National Disaster Response Force joined the search and rescue operation, Rediff reported. Rescue teams were searching the debris for anyone still trapped. Early reports differed on how many people might be missing, and officials had not confirmed a final figure.

The identities of the dead and the precise cause of the collapse had not been established in the reports available. The investigation is ongoing.
