Delhi Police have arrested three contractors in connection with the collapse of an under-construction building in Old Delhi’s Chawri Bazar, according to reports from ANI and CNN-News18.
The contractors were identified as Siraj, Tajuddin and Furkan. The Hindu reported that they were apprehended in Village Sirohi, in Haryana’s Faridabad district. Moneycontrol also reported the arrests.
The arrests follow Thursday’s collapse of a three-storey building under construction in Gali Sheesh Mahal, Chawri Bazar. The Hindu reported that the case was registered under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which concerns culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
Two people died and two others were injured in the collapse, according to NDTV’s report on the incident. The Hindu said rescue operations were continuing when it reported the arrests; the latest supplied reports do not establish whether those operations have since concluded.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta ordered an inquiry after the collapse, while the Municipal Corporation of Delhi suspended a junior engineer and an assistant engineer, according to PTI reporting published by Rediff. The precise circumstances that led to the collapse remain under investigation.
