A magnitude-6.1 earthquake struck offshore from Japan’s Kanto region on Friday evening, near Tokyo, with no tsunami warning or advisory reported.
The Japan Meteorological Agency said the shallow quake occurred at 7:39 p.m. local time in the sea off the Kanto coast, according to The Japan Times and an Agence France-Presse report carried by NDTV. The reports said no tsunami alert was issued.
There is a distinction in the tsunami updates: ANI reported that Japan’s agency issued a forecast for possible minor sea-level changes along the eastern Kanto coast, while saying no tsunami warning or advisory had been triggered and destructive waves were not expected.
The Japan Times reported that the Japan Meteorological Agency recorded seismic intensity 3 on Japan’s seven-level scale. It said there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. The situation may develop as authorities assess the effects of the tremor.
Early reports gave slightly different magnitude estimates: Reuters’ brief report, carried by The Tribune, described the quake as magnitude 5.99, while later coverage cited a magnitude of 6.1. No casualty or damage figures were confirmed in the supplied reporting.
