Two killed and 16 injured in bus crash near Lent, French authorities say

Two people, including a minor and a young adult, were killed and 16 injured when a bus carrying schoolchildren crashed near Lent in eastern France on Friday morning, according to the Ain prefecture.

The prefecture said three of the injured were in serious condition. The crash happened near Lent, in the Ain department, north-east of Lyon and close to the Swiss border, The Associated Press reported, citing French authorities.

Reports differ on how to describe the vehicle: Education Minister Édouard Geffray said it was a school bus, while the prefecture referred to an intercity bus. France 24 reported that it was carrying 43 passengers, including schoolchildren.

Lent Mayor Yves Cristin said the bus left the road and struck a tree in a ditch at about 7 a.m. local time, according to Deutsche Welle. Emergency services and law-enforcement officers were sent to the scene, the prefecture said.

Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot said he was heading to the site, the AP reported. The cause of the crash was not established in the reports available.
