Lakewood shooting: reports say one officer was killed and three wounded as dashcam footage emerges

Dashcam footage from the fatal Lakewood shooting has reportedly been released, while separate news reports say one police officer was killed and three others wounded in the exchange of gunfire on Thursday evening.

A post by upuknews1 says newly released dashcam video captures the gunfire. The footage release has not been detailed in the supplied reporting from news outlets.

The Colorado Sun reported that Lakewood police were called at about 6.30pm to West Colfax Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard over a report of a suspicious person attempting to board a Regional Transportation District bus. Police spokesperson John Romero said the suspect opened fire when officers arrived.

The Colorado Sun reported that four officers were hit by gunfire: one died and three were wounded. The suspect was also shot and killed by police, and a bystander was hurt. Axios reported that the surviving officers were being treated at local hospitals; their conditions were not immediately available.

There is some uncertainty in the initial accounts about precisely where the shooting took place. The Colorado Sun reported that Romero said he could not confirm whether it happened on or just outside the bus. Axios said RTD described the incident as taking place aboard a contracted bus serving Route 76 and said the agency was cooperating with police.

Police had not publicly identified the officer who died, the wounded officers or the suspect in the reports reviewed. Romero said the suspect may have been involved in a hit-and-run earlier that day, but that possible connection has not been established in the available reporting. The investigation is ongoing.
